My Files

In short

My Files keeps your photos, videos, audio and documents in folders, ready to use as what your Linxy Marks, Dynamic Links and playlists open. Upload many files at once from the Linxy App (they keep going if you leave the app or lock the phone) or drop whole folders on the web. Every file is checked for viruses before it can be used.

Files sent to your Secure Upload links land in My Files too, each link in its own folder.

Opening My Files

In the Linxy App: on Home, tap My Files.

On the web: sign in at lnxy.me and choose My Files in the menu. The All media button on that page opens the full account library, which also lists the images of your Linxy Marks.

My Files has two views: Folders and All files. A bar at the top shows how much storage you have used.

Adding files

In the app

  1. In My Files, tap Add files (or, inside a folder, Add files here).
  2. Under Put them in, choose a folder, make a new one, or leave them Unfiled.
  3. Choose Photos and videos to pick many from your Photos, Files for PDFs, documents and audio, or Take a photo.

You can pick up to 200 files at a time, up to 1 GB each. The upload screen shows each file's progress. You can leave the app or lock the phone: the files keep uploading, and you get one notification when the whole batch is ready. Tap the notification to open My Files.

When the batch is done, the Upload finished screen offers what you most likely want next: Make a playlist link, A link for each file, or Add to an existing Mark or link.

On the web

Drag files, or whole folders, onto the drop area. You can also use Upload files or Upload folder. A folder you drop keeps its shape: its subfolders become folders inside My Files. Files go into the folder you have open, or to the top level when All files or Unfiled is open. Keep the page open until the uploads finish.

What happens to a file you add

Every file is checked before it can be used:

  1. Its contents must match its type (a file named .jpg must really be a picture).
  2. It is scanned for viruses.
  3. Videos and audio get their length. Every file gets a picture: videos, photos and PDFs get a preview, and audio gets its own cover art when the file has one, or a sound-wave picture when it does not. Other documents show an icon for their type. A video in a format that does not play everywhere is converted to one that does.

While this runs the file shows Checking for viruses. Most files are ready in seconds; long videos can take a few minutes. A file that fails a check is not kept and shows why, for example Not kept: a virus was found.

My Files keeps pictures (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, TIFF), video (MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM), audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC), PDFs, Office and Apple iWork documents, text and CSV files, and ZIP files.

Folders

  • New folder: on the Folders view, or New folder inside from a folder's menu (the … button) to make one inside it.
  • Rename, Put inside another folder or Move to the top level from the folder's menu.
  • Move files: choose files, then Move. On the web you can also drag chosen files onto a folder in the list on the left.
  • Delete folder: its files move to Unfiled and its folders move up one level. No file is deleted.

Each Secure Upload link has its own folder, marked Secure Upload. See Secure upload for choosing or changing that folder.

Folder covers

Each folder’s card shows a picture. Unless you choose one, it is the newest photo in the folder, and a folder with no photos shows a folder icon. You can choose the picture yourself, in the Linxy App or on the web.

  1. Open the folder and tap the … button.
  2. Tap Change cover. The Folder cover screen shows how the card looks now.
  3. Choose a picture:
ChoiceWhat it does
Photos in this folderTap one. It becomes the cover straight away.
Choose from My FilesPick any photo, or a video’s still under Video stills, then tap Use as cover.
Choose from your phonePick a photo, pinch and drag to fit it to the card, then tap Use this photo. The photo is kept as the cover only. It is not added to the folder.
Use automatic coverGoes back to the newest photo in the folder.

On the web: open the folder in My Files and choose Folder ▾ › Change cover…. The choices are the same, except that Upload from your computer takes the place of Choose from your phone: drag the photo to fit the card, use the slider to zoom, then choose Use this photo. Folders show their covers on the web as well.

If you later delete the file you chose as the cover, the folder goes back to the automatic cover.

Finding a file

Open All files. Search by file name, by who sent it (Secure Upload) or by folder name. Narrow the list to Photos, Videos, Audio, PDFs or Documents, and sort by newest, oldest, name or size. A green In use label marks files you have added to a Mark or Dynamic Link from My Files.

Using files in a Mark or Dynamic Link

Linxy Marks and Dynamic Links take the same content, so everything here works for both.

Starting from My Files

In a folder, tap the … button and Choose files (or touch and hold a file), choose one or more, then:

ChoiceWhat it does
Make a link / Playlist linkMakes one new Dynamic Link. With several files it opens them as a playlist, in the order you chose them.
Link for eachMakes a separate Dynamic Link for every chosen file.
Add to…Pick one of your Marks or Dynamic Links, then Add to the end of its playlist or Replace what it opens. Replaced items stay in My Files.

The links are ready to copy or share straight away.

  • Name: a single link or a playlist link gets a name. Linxy suggests one from the files (for several files, the first file’s name and how many more); change it if you like. The name is how the link appears in My Linxy.
  • Protected viewer (on unless you untick it): the files open in Linxy’s protected viewer and their storage address is never shown. In a browser, the page opens only in the browser that opened the link, and only for a limited time; the link itself keeps working for anyone you give it to. Turn it off for a plain link that opens the file directly. See How protected content opens.
  • A playlist link plays the files in the order you chose, with each file’s picture and name. People who play it in the Linxy App see the same picture and name on their lock screen and watch.

Starting from a Mark

In the app, open the Mark's Content screen and tap Add from My Files. Tap videos, audio or photos in the order they should play, then Add. To swap one item, tap it and choose Replace with a file from My Files.

Where a file is used, and deleting

Open a file to see Used in: every Mark and Dynamic Link that opens it or has it in its playlist.

Deleting a file that is in use asks first. Delete anyway takes it out of those playlists, so they skip it. If a Mark or link opens only that file, Linxy will not delete it: replace it in that Mark or link first, then delete it.

Storage

The amount of storage depends on your plan. My Files shows how much you have used and how much your plan allows. Everything in your account library counts, including the images of your Linxy Marks. If a batch does not fit, nothing is uploaded and Linxy tells you how much room is left. Deleting files frees space.

Symptoms, causes and fixes

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
A folder shows a folder icon instead of a pictureThe folder has no photos, and no cover was chosenOpen the folder, tap the … button, then Change cover
Uploads stopped after you closed the appThe app was swiped away in the app switcher. Phones stop uploads from an app closed that way.Leave the app in the background or lock the phone instead. Open My Files and add the missing files again.
Not enough roomThe batch is bigger than what your plan has left.Delete files you no longer need, or upload fewer at a time.
Not kept: not the file type its name saysThe file's contents do not match its name, for example a renamed file.Export or save the file again in its real format.
A file stays on Checking for virusesLong videos take a few minutes to check and convert.Wait, then pull down to refresh. You can leave the screen.
A file cannot be added to a MarkIt is still being checked.Try again when it shows its size and type instead of a status.
An audio file shows a sound-wave pictureThe file has no cover art of its ownNothing is wrong. To show its own art, add cover art to the file in your music software and upload it again.
A link you sent opens fine, but an address copied from the browser shows This view has endedProtected viewer is on. The address in the browser’s address bar belongs to the browser that opened the linkShare the link itself, not the address from the address bar.
… opens only this file when deletingThe file is the only thing a Mark or link opens.Replace it in that Mark or link first.

Things people commonly get wrong

“Deleting a folder deletes its files.”It does not. The files move to Unfiled.
“Replacing what a Mark opens deletes the old files.”The old files stay in My Files. Delete them there if you no longer need them.
“I have to keep the app open while it uploads.”In the app you can leave or lock the phone. Only swiping the app away stops uploads. On the web, keep the page open.
“Protected viewer stops the link working for other people.”The link works for anyone you give it to. What stays with one browser is the temporary page it opens, not the link.
