Using a Mark on a display screen

In short

A Mark with a playlist can run a simple display by itself: a phone or tablet that keeps cycling through your videos, photos and web pages in a lobby, a shop window, a booth or a waiting room. Set the playlist to Play all or Shuffle with Repeat on, scan the Mark with the Linxy App on the display device, and leave it running. The screen stays on while the list plays.

Then lock the device to the Linxy App and silence calls and notifications, as below.

Set up the Mark

In the App, open My Linxy, tap your Mark, then Content & playback and Playback for viewers. On the web, use the Playlist section of the Mark’s editor. Suggested settings for a display:

SettingFor a display
Let viewers see and choose itemsOn (the Mark needs at least two items)
When scanned, openFull screen, so the items fill the screen
Starts withPlay all for your order, or Shuffle for a mix
RepeatOn, so the list starts over after the last item
Pause between itemsInstant for a seamless loop; a few seconds shows an Up next card between items
Show each photo forLong enough to read the photo, often 8 to 15 sec
Include web pages and Show each page forOn if the Mark has pages you want shown; 15 to 30 sec suits most pages
Viewers can change the modeOff, if passers-by can touch the screen

Tap Save. Changes reach the display the next time the Mark is scanned on it.

Start the display

  1. On the display device, open the Linxy App and scan the Mark.
  2. Let the first item start. The list then runs by itself and keeps the screen on.
  3. If you changed the Mark’s settings since the last scan, scan it again so the display uses them.

Keep the device on the Linxy App

Phones and tablets have their own setting that keeps a device in one app. Menu names vary a little between models and versions.

Calls, messages and notifications

A display should not ring or show messages. Choose one:

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb: a Focus on iPhone and iPad, or Do Not Disturb on Android. Calls, messages and banners stay quiet and off the screen.
  • Use a device without phone service, such as a tablet or an old phone with no SIM. It cannot receive calls or texts at all.

If a call does come in, the video pauses while the phone rings and starts again when the call ends. Photo and page timers wait while another app is on screen, so the list does not skip ahead. A message or notification banner shows over the display without stopping it.

Power and placement

  • Keep it plugged in. A screen that stays on uses the battery quickly.
  • Keep it connected. Videos and pages stream over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so a steady connection matters.
  • Mind the orientation. Videos follow the orientation you chose for the Mark, portrait or landscape, so mount the device to match.
  • Set the volume for the room, or mute it for a silent display.

Things people commonly get wrong

“Saving the settings updates the display right away.”A display keeps the settings from its last scan. Scan the Mark again on the display after you change anything.
“The display needs a special app.”It runs in the ordinary Linxy App. The phone’s own Guided Access or App pinning keeps it there.
